The Birkel group works on the interface of solid state chemistry and materials science focusing on the synthesis, structure, and properties of inorganic compounds.

Birkel group members are experts in a large variety of preparation techniques ranging from room-temperature to high-temperature as well as classical to non-conventional methods. This allows them to develop synthesis strategies that can be targeted at a plethora of 3D and 2D inorganic materials.

They use state-of-the-art diffraction and microscopy techniques in order to understand and manipulate the structure and microstructure of the target materials. Their properties are investigated in the context of energy-relevant applications, such as magnets and catalysts.
